Read the following prompt and write a short essay using approximately 120–150 words. You should spend about 30 minutes on this task.
In class, your professor presents the two figures on the next page during her talk on "open-book exams"--that is, exams where students are allowed to bring notes and reference books.
She then gives you an assignment on the following topic:
Should open-book exams be encouraged in universities?
In the assignment, you should write a short essay in which you
- summarize the main points shown in the two figures;
- state your own opinion on the topic, using the information from the two figures as well as citing examples from your own experience.

The two figures show both students' and professors' views on open-book exams. According to the pie chart, professors who promote open-book exams have quite diverse reasons, ➎with promoting critical thinking, learning deeper, and suiting the learning styles of individual students, being the top three reasons. As for students, more than half of them seem to disagree with the idea of open-book exams, stating that they cost even more time for students to look for answers. ➊Still, some students stand on the positive side, expressing that such exams are closer to real-world experience and help access deeper knowledge and skills.
➋In my opinion, I strongly agree with the idea of encouraging open-book exams in universities based on the following reasons. First of all, open-book exams help relieve students' stress on preparing for the tests. ➌For regular tests, I usually need to memorize as much important information as I can, which stresses me out all the time. Yet, I only need to figure out the concepts and ideas behind the information while preparing for open-book tests. It helps reduce more than half of the time as well as stress on the preparation of the exams. Secondly, ➍open-book exams allow students to learn more deeply, and thus gain a better understanding to the knowledge. This is because they force students to figure out the concept, instead of relying on mere memorization. Last but not least, such exams grant students with the ability to look for solutions when facing problems. For college students about to enter the job market, such problem-solving skills will be the core value they can provide for corporations. At the same time, the problem-solving skills are what the company value the most when searching for talents nowadays.
In conclusion, I believe open-book exams should be encouraged in universities, since they help reduce students' stress, help students learn more deeply, and equips students with the ability to solve problems with the resources they possess.
